Year 1 2019 - 2020

Mrs Gleave

Mrs Sheehy

Mrs Harrahill

Hello Year 1! We hope that you are enjoying having lots of time to play at home with your family and with your toys. Below are some challenges that you can try at home to keep learning and discovering new things. We will be updating them regularly whilst school is closed. These are all just suggestions and to be done when you have chance. The most important thing right now is to stay home, keep safe and have fun with your family.

Hopefully we will see you all soon!

Home Learning Ideas

Please follow the school Twitter page. We'd love you to tweet us some photographs and messages to let us know what you've been up to.

Also, have a go at the weekly competitions on there! This week's competition (ends Friday 10th April @5pm) is for children to draw a picture of a view from their window. There will be a prize!

English - Reading / spelling / writing

  • Please read daily - this could be you reading a book or listening to someone else reading to you.
  • The following websites have online books / comics to read. Both websites are free.

  • Can you complete this book hunt?

  • Spelling of common exception words (see attached file for spellings) Can you practise spelling a few words at a time? Can you write the words in a sentence? Can you use adjectives in your sentences? Can you write a question sentence with any of the words? You could join some sentences with the conjunction 'and.' If you can read and spell all of these words, please look at the list of words on the Year 2 page!
  • Adding suffixes to words - Please see attached er / est sheets. If you cannot print the sheet, you can write the words / sentences on paper.
  • Book recommendation Choose one of the books you have read / heard. Would you recommend this book? Why / why not? How many stars out of 5 would you give the book? Make a 'book recommendation' poster. Repeat for other books. We would love to display these posters when we return to school.
  • Handwriting Can you write the matching capital letter for each lowercase letter? Remember, capital letters do not have flicks and are always tall.

Please read first the attached file - 'April 1st Maths Update'.

The matching worksheets / PowerPoints, etc. are attached below. is a good website for Maths games. Hit the Button (on Topmarks) is a good game for practising number bonds, doubles and timestables (start with 2s, 5s and 10s) against the clock!

  • Spring has sprung! Look for signs of spring in your garden / if you go for a walk. What can you see? What is different to Winter? What special events happen / have already happened in Spring? Can you make a mindmap / poster of your findings?
  • As new flowers appear, see if you can name them and their parts (e.g. stem, petal...) You could draw pictures of flowers you see and label them.

We're sure lots of you have been joining in with Joe Wicks but have you tried some yoga too?

Try Cosmic Yoga - videos on YouTube.

Homework is sent home on a Friday. Please return completed homework by the following Tuesday.

Children should read regularly at home. When they are ready for a new book, they should put their book and reading record in their class basket / tray so that it can be changed.

Wet Playtimes

Children should have a colouring book and some pencil crayons that they can keep in their tray to use during wet playtimes. We have some paper and crayons available for children to use.
